nursery love

i never fully finished ainsley's nursery the way that i had intended...call me a procrastinator at heart. i remember rushing around the nursery the night before i was induced, panicked that i didn't have anything ready!

fast forward and i still haven't had the time to decorate her nursery the way that i'd really like! however, today i had the day off and i spent a little time adding some fun things to her nursery...

my best friend gave ainsley her first pair of converse sneakers! 

they are now too small and i just couldn't stand to pack them away! 

 

i used these poms for ainsley's first birthday party! 

they were too cute and i had to find a second use for them! i love it.

 a friend and i hand painted the tree on her nursery. i added some fake flowers for a 3d touch!

her auntie sarah bought her the owl stuffed animal for her owl themed birthday party.

ainsley loves it and so do i!

fifteen.months

Ainsley turned 15 months on February 4th. I cannot believe it!

Her vocabulary has just exploded! I am absolutely amazed by her and she, without a doubt, teaches me something new about myself each and every day.

She signs for please, thank you, more, all done,and milk.

She says, other than the obvious mama and daddy: please, dog, duck, book, thank you, more, fish, up, no, yes, baby, ainsley (she attempts to say it anyway), cat, meow, bath, down, papa, hi, bye...I think that is it.

She runs everywhere she goes. She avoids bedtime by asking me to read as many books as I will allow. Her new thing to do is stand up in the bathtub, which I hate. She loves to fill her washcloth up with water and then dump it over her head and apparently you have to be standing in order to do that. We are really working on NOT throwing her food at meal times...any advice?

She loves barney, elmo, shoes (both hers and ours), taking walks in her wagon, feeding the dogs, and reading books. Her current food snack favorites are goldfish and yogurt raisins.

One of my many new years resolutions was to try to snap a few pictures of Ainsley for every holiday...paying someone is just way too expensive and because of that reason, I sort of dropped the ball during her first year of life. Thus, here I am trying to make up for it. She was WAY MORE mobile than she was for her Christmas shots and she didn't really have any interest in staying around my set up. After about 5 or 6 minutes, I had to resort to the lollipop to keep her entertained...hey, whatever works! She was not a happy camper when I took the lollipop away from her after it was all over...so tortured she is :)

She is such a sweet girl! Enjoy!

You probably won't ever really hear me talk about my job, however, this post does pertain to something we have done in my classroom.

This year I have made the switch from an LD (learning disabled) Special Ed. teacher at an elementary school to an ID (intellectually disabled) Special Ed. teacher at a high school. I must say that I enjoy being at the high school level so much more, for so many different reasons.

I work with a specific population that focuses on life skills/job training, rather than AP courses and college bound students.  One thing that I have learned from my classroom full of boys, ranging from 8th-12th graders, is that they are very hands on.  They love welding, wood shop, cooking and everything else in between. 

I have learned that the shop teachers are absolutely WONDERFUL. They donate things to my classroom whenever needed.  I came across a great tutorial for a Valentine's Day craft using perfect square 4x4's.  I went to the shop teacher with the idea and he donated the wood (cut by his students), the sandpaper, and some spray paint so that I could do this project without having to use a lot of my own money.  Yay for free stuff, kind hearts and talented youngin's! I gave students their blocks (3 each) and they sanded them blocks nice and smooth. Please note that the wood we received was in pretty bad shape and there was only so much we could do to salvage some of the blocks. I tried to tell my students that it just adds character. They believed me :)

Each block was then spray painted red. After the blocks dried, one block stayed red, another was spray painted pink and the last block was spray painted white. They are doing such a great job and I am really proud at how seriously they are taking this activity. Here is a picture of a students spray painted blocks in progress:         
    

When students were officially done coating the blocks, I had them rough the blocks up with sand paper. The pink and white blocks have some of the 1st coat of red showing through to give it a sort of vintage look. The red block has the wood show through. Below is a picture a students sanded blocks:

The next step was to add sticker letters to represent the conversation heart candies that are sold for Valentine's Day.  Here is the final result:

I am so proud of their hard work and how awesome these came out! The main difference between what we did and what the original tutorial did was that we sanded by hand.  The original tutorial used a power sander. I would highly recommend using a power sander...they sanded until their hands were burning! I just didn't trust them enough to use a power sander :)
